Video Production Process
Our video production process sets us apart. We are streamlined, focused, and efficient, while also being agile in order to ensure that innovative and creative ideas are heard and implemented, no matter the stage of the process. As a full-service video production company, Tippingpoint Labs is adept at helping clients navigate the video production process from discovery through to delivery.
One element of the video production process that is unique to Tippingpoint Labs is that Founder and Director, Jim Cosco, and Producer, Rebecca Garnick Ast, work with clients each step of the way. Having high-level team members lead the process from discovery to pre-production to production and eventually post-production ensures that there are no communication errors or misunderstandings from start to finish.
Discovery
Discovery is the first step. This step is where the team shares the big picture and blue sky ideas for the video. We talk through the vision, mission, objective, target audience, messaging, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to fully understand our client’s definition of a successful video. We ask a series of questions and share ideas in order to develop a concept, a budget, a timeline, and a measurable goal.
Pre-Production
We firmly believe that a successful video outcome is determined in the video pre-production stage. During this phase, we work with our clients to refine messaging points, write a script, determine location, hire cast, develop design and motion graphics, identify technical details (e.g. gear and equipment), select crew, create detailed schedules and ultimately confirm and precisely document all aspects of the video. We collaborate closely with clients during the pre-production stage and use this time to understand the style, tone, mood, and aesthetics for the video. This step is crucial to delivering an effective product that comes in on budget and on time.
Production
Lights. Camera. Action! With the pre-production details in place, we move toward the production day(s). Our crew is led by Director, Jim Cosco, and Producer, Rebecca Garnick Ast who ensure that the production shoot details are in order so that the whole crew can execute on the vision for the video down to the very last detail. We film using best-in-class cameras, lighting, audio and technical gear. And we can augment our film packages with drones, steadicams, MOVIs and other equipment that will help us deliver on the intent and vision of the video. Our crew of camera operators, lighting directors, audio engineers, grips, teleprompter operators, stylists, make-up artists, and more work collaboratively to execute seamlessly and with precision.
We also have the ability to shoot video remotely using web platforms that allow us to capture interviews and stories virtually. We use virtual video filming for a variety of reasons as it can often be a great and simpler way to film remotely.
Post-Production
The final stage of the process is post-production, where all the pieces of the puzzle come together. We bring together design, motion graphics, typography, music, pace, tone, messaging, script, and footage to create a layered and rich video that embodies the vision and achieves the objectives as defined earlier in the process. We understand that every client is unique and we honor that by delivering video that brings their unique and complex message to life.
Versioning Videos for Social Media and Inclusivity
Once post-production is complete, the video process does not need to stop. Because it is wise and cost effective to create various versions of video, we often consider other ways footage can be used. These versions can take many forms. We often deliver video versions that are shorter in duration or longer in duration than the original video. We can add closed or open captioning to videos. And, if planned early in the process, we can create not only 16 x 9 landscape videos (ideal for YouTube marketing), but can also produce square videos and vertical videos for Instagram, LinkedIn and other social media platforms and social video uses. We want our clients to get the very most out of all the footage captured and we are constantly thinking of ways to re-edit, re-purpose, and re-use the footage.
A Deconstructed Video Process
Tippingpoint Labs uses the video production process outlined above the majority of the time. But, sometimes clients come to us with many distinct requests and we do not need to follow this process rigidly or at all, if the project has different needs.
We have clients who come to us with their vision already determined and are looking for video production, without discovery and concepting. They need a video production company focused solely on execution of their established vision.
We have clients who have come to us with their footage already shot and need help to piece it together and edit it.
We have clients who have the capability to create designs or motion graphics but need help in developing a story.
We have clients with videos from five years ago and they need to re-edit without re-filming.
And so on.
Every project at Tippingpoint Labs has its own unique process elements. And not all projects need to follow the video production process as outlined above. We assess the needs of each client, determine what we can do to support the project, and work to find the right solution and the right process for the challenge at hand.
